Some quotes and a bit of stuff. 03.06.03 (15.40) I watched Amelié, as I said I would. And I also stayed up 'til 6 am, as I assumed I would. And I watched the partial solar eclipse, and it was cute. Cute being the word of choice, because I don't know how to describe it. It looked odd, 'cause everything went grey'ish, and such, but it was fun. And worth staying up for, even:> And I fell madly in love with Amelié, but it seems that with that movie, it's a given. It was the biggest push of "weee!" I've gotten in ages, which is why I stayed up 'til 6 and made postcards and stuff, just because I had to do something. They look good, and it's so nice to just make things like that. I've also been thinking about making a little zine of magnetic poetry, 'cause it wouldn't require a lot of effort, and I don't have any effort to waste. or something. I'm going to London in 7 days! Yay! Today I had a driving lesson, and I'm no longer uncertain about being able to get my license before I leave (which would be late June or so). It might not work out, but it doesn't seem overly optimistic, since today's lesson was learning how to control your car on icy roads. Which I didn't do brilliantly on, really, but it was fun! I mean, I got to drive in 70 km/h and then brake hard, and then go 'round and 'round. Granted, I wasn't supposed to go for the 'round part, but it was fun! And then, after a while, I mostly got the hang of it, so I stopped spinning around all over the place. Did realise that I will not be driving much faster than 30 km/h the moment even a bit of ice appears on the ground, but whatever. Better safe than sorry:p Ah yes, the lesson began at 8 am. But I managed to get up! Yay:> Also, I went to the cinema on Sunday and watched Hero. I really liked it, though I can't give you a coherent reason for why and such. The fightscenes were amazing, unrealistical, yes, but still better (and not so friggin long!) than the ones in The Matrix. And it's fun to watch movies where you have to base yourself only on the subtitles, though it annoys me, because I wish I knew everything. Every language anyways. That would make me happy. So what I need is one of those helpful Babelfish. Yes. And then I also need to finish The Hitchhiker's guide. Will get to it. And in the end, I'll leave you with these quotes I found in TLS (which I bought myself yesterday, because it makes me feel like the right kind of geek *loves*) She may be a professor at Stanford, but in fact she has escaped. Armed with the expertise of a long-serving professional academic, she has freed herself to write with an honesty and enthusiasm and even facetiousness that academic discourse forbids. Many of the pieces here begin as lengthy reviews. It might sound like condescension to say that Castle is at her best when reviewing, but in fact it reflects a rare achievement. Reviewing has allowed her to combine scholarly knowledge and curiosity with a zestful and colloquial style, ecouraging a straightforwardness that does not come readily in academic books or essays. Here she is summing up some of the difficulties of Charlotte Brontë's character: "The creator of Jane Eyre was not fastidious or painstaking or fair. She was only great". It is a relief to be able to say these things. Castle is even allowed to call her "a genious". (this just made me happy, because it just seemed like the sort of thing I would love someone to say about me one day) Review of the Matrix by Christopher Taylor, TLS 30th of May, 2003: The Matrix was good fun, and the more portentous business was reasonably subdued. A scene with The Oracle [...] involved the hero in a Zen free-will debate which was, she boasted, "really going to bake your noodle". But Reeves does have an almost limitless capacity for suggesting that has noodle has indeed been thoroughly baked - and his sweet air of benevolent incomprehension made and effective foil for the script's more embarrasing moments. (bwahahaa! I like it when people make fun of Keanu Reeves and the stick actor he is. I'm mean.) George Orwell in a letter to Malcolm Muggeridge 4th of December 1948: I have just finished a novel I have been tinkering about with since the summer of 1947. I would have finished it six months ago if I had been well. I am not pleased with it, but I think it is a good idea. (my bolding) It is a fantasy really, a story about the future (after the atomic wars) written in the form of a novel. Thank God I can still work, but that is about all I can do.(guess three times which fantasy novel he's talking about... It's just. wow. I mean, I only wish that one day I'd be able to write a book like 1984 and think "well, maybe it didn't suck horribly". Gah. Also, the entire article of letters is available here) Music of the moment: Vidag Vang. Absolutely totally nothing but Vidar Vang. |
